Education

University of Nevada, Reno: Pure Mathematics Major (BS), Physics Minor I am still actively pursuing this degree. Thus, I aim to expand the range of subjects I offer as time progresses and my expertise broadens. For example, I anticipate that I will begin offering sessions with linear algebra students within the next few months, and later this year, I intend to offer sessions in abstract algebra and real analysis.

Experience

I have been a mathematics tutor for a little over a year. During this time, I have worked with students on topics from pre-algebra to multivariate calculus and differential equations. I consider myself a flexible tutor. I personalize lessons as much as possible, not just based on the academic background of the student, but their interests. For example, a musician taking differential equations will often find mechanical vibrations conceptually intuitive if it is contextualized in a musical sense. Artists and other visual thinkers are aided by geometric proofs and spatial reasoning analogies. Physics and engineering majors or those with related backgrounds will often find physical applications and real world manifestations of mathematical ideas helpful. Basing the content of my lessons on the mindset of the individual allows me to form lasting, effective relationships with all different sorts of students. It is commonly stated that one learns a subject more deeply when teaching it to another person, and I absolutely agree with this notion. Along with deepening my own understanding of mathematics, however, I find teaching to be fun and intellectually stimulating. In fact, my experiences with tutoring have led me to the realization that I enjoy teaching more than I ever could have anticipated. I find mathematics not only useful, but also inexpressibly beautiful. I feel that until the mid-college level, this beauty can be difficult to see for many students, mainly because it is often obscured by austerity. I make it a point to elucidate the conceptual interconnections and purposes of mathematics, because having a sense of the big picture of this field is not only helpful in becoming a successful student—it is, in fact, necessary for true understanding of the subject. I believe that everyone is capable of developing an intuitive understanding of mathematical topics, and this is what I strive to do through tutoring.

Hobbies

I am an artist, in many senses. I am often involved with large scale art installations and similar projects, often on a volunteer basis, and I appreciate and admire the collaborative efforts required to complete such projects. I work in infrastructure and logistics, helping build a temporary city of 70,000 people in the middle of the desert every year. The monumental scale of the project is difficult to put into words. I also have previously worked as a professional watercolorist and technical inkworker, and I play guitar. I spend a lot of time thinking about very, very large things, like galaxies—as well as very, very small things, like quarks. As my interests indicate, size and scale are fascinating concepts to me. I like to think about how the patterns in which stars cluster are almost indistinguishable from the patterns formed by neural pathways. Recursion is one of my favorite ideas. I am interested in mathematics outside of school, as well—in fact, my interest in the subject is primarily non-academic. I consider mathematics to be an art form, just like poetry, painting, and engineering. I enjoy logic puzzles and strategically intense games. But most of all, I just like the intense sensory rush that comes along with learning new ideas. The feeling that the world never loses novelty and that there will always be something new to explore is a paramount idea in my life. I expect I will never stop being a student, regardless of when I graduate.
